Olga Jurasek -  April 29, 1931 — July 14, 2018

On July 14, 2018, our dear mother, grand-mother and great grandmother, Olga Jurasek (nee Sumyk) passed away peacefully after a long battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and now God has a new expert gardener tending his gardens.  She was 87 years young and maintained her wry sense of humour and her direct, no-nonsense command of her kids right up until the end.

Olga’s life was centred on her family, friends and church and while she will be missed by all who were blessed to know her, we take comfort in the fact she is no longer struggling with her health and will be able to garden, smell the flowers and listen to the birds sing once again.  Olga was born on April 29, 1931, in the Thorhild area.  She met Louis Jurasek and they were married on November 10, 1951— a loving marriage that lasted for 48 years, until Louis passed in 2000.  They spent over 45 years farming near Thorhild and raising their six children, before retiring and moving to Legal.  Olga later moved to Morinville, and finally to St. Albert.  Both Olga and Louis will be missed by their children: Danny (Mary), Pat (Connie), Louise (Sheldon), Laura (Al), Lawrence (Theresa) and Gary (Stephanie); grand-children: Cindy (Marcel), Terry, Christopher, Jennifer (Chris), Chelsea (Chad), James (Jennifer), Mason, Twyla, Alyssa (Eric), Aiden and Ainsley; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Lily, Jacob, Adalie, Connor, Samantha and Louie.  Olga was pre-deceased by her two older brothers, Mike and Walter, but leaves behind her two younger brothers Jan (Nadia) and Victor (Anne).

In addition to her award-winning gardening skills, Olga was a talented painter, seamstress and awesome cook.  She enjoyed sewing and devoted much of her free time to making quilts and blankets which were donated to Blankets For Canada. She was the glue that held the ever-growing family together and no one could ever make better perogies or meatballs - which were the staple of all family gatherings.  Quick-minded and witty, she loved playing crib with her friends and family, and didn’t mind taking everyone’s money at family poker tournaments. Olga was an amazing role model for her family, and set an example that will be difficult to match.

The family hopes you will be able to join them in celebrating her life and legacy.  Prayer services will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at 7:30 pm at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Thorhild, Alberta (Father Phan officiating). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 20, 2018 at 10:30 am, also at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church, Thorhild, Alberta with interment to follow in the church cemetery (Father Ignacy Warias officiating). For those who choose to do so, donations can be made in Olga’s memory to the Alberta Lung Association.
